Local authorities in the UK are becoming increasingly aware of the difficulties of tackling waste disposal in a cost - effective and environmentally friendly way. North Staffordshire alone produces approximately 250 000 tonnes of waste each year, enough to fill the new Stoke-on-Trent Britannia Stadium four times.

Staffordshire County Council and Stoke City Council, in partnership with Martin Engineering Systems Ltd (MES), have met the challenges of modern waste management by employing new technology to transform an outdated incinerator into a state of the art waste to energy plant.

Waste to Energy is a sustainable environmentally friendly process which turns heat energy, from the combustion of municipal waste, into electricity. Stoke on Trent's new 'Sinergy' (Stoke Incineration Energy) plant generates 12.5 MW of renewable ("green") electricity for Staffordshire
